The Butterfly Center and Greenhouses!

The past month at my internship has been very exciting and enjoyable! When I first started interning at the Houston Museum of Natural Science this past year, I was working in the paleontology lab. As it turns out I was not as interested in the subject as I thought I would be. While it was an incredible experience and I made so many great connections I moved on to working in the butterfly center as well as the greenhouses located at the top of the parking lot. I never realized how much work went into the keeping of the center. Now being part of the team that takes care of the butterflies, plants, and various other animals/ insects I understand this amount of work on a whole nother level.
Every Wednesday morning I start my day off by doing a check on the butterflies if there are any in need of attention, I assist to the best of my ability and if there are any that have unfortunately passed the night before I will collect those. After, I feed the turtles and lizards and fertilize the plants if needed. Once my job is complete in the center, I make my way upstairs to the greenhouses. While I am there I work on what is called training the plants. This entails cutting any tangents that have grown out of the stems onto other plants and then rewrapping them inside of their own pot. After this is all complete, the time is 11:15 and I head back to school.
